Little Nightmares 2 Review: Beautiful Nightmare Fuel

The original Little Nightmares had a fantastic blend of beautiful, colorful environments and creepy, twisted monstrosities. It was a game that I enjoyed but didn’t love. The sequel takes the formula so masterfully crafted by the original and adds onto it. The result is a game that improved upon the original in every single way. It has a better story, more interesting puzzles, improved graphics and animations, and it is just a more enjoyable experience that is hard to put down.

There is a dream. It’s not a special dream, but it is a dream nonetheless. It is the dream of a restaurant. It would be in the middle of the woods, because the woods are my favorite. It would have a funny name, like Waiter Rant or Post Modern Pancakes.  But that’s not the point of this dream. The point is that it would serve breakfast all day long.

Little Nightmares is an indie horror game with a unique style and a ton of puzzles to get through. That alone sets it apart from most games. But what makes it such a great game, is the atmosphere. This game is creepy, in more ways than one. The atmosphere makes you feel as if you are in a dark place with something you can’t see. But something is watching you. You may not see it, but it is there. It just wants you to know it is there.

The original gameLittle Nightmares came out in 2017 to exceptionally positive reviews. The combination of grotesque and terrifying imagery, a mysterious story and a host of confusing platform games created a furore. Now developer Tarsier Studios brings us back to this creepy little world withLittle Nightmares 2, which builds on the style and success of the original, adds a few new ideas and continues the story.

Little Nightmares 2 Review: Miracle fuel for nightmare

word-image-10882 Little Nightmares 2 is described as an atmospheric platform and puzzle game. You play as a child named Mono, who wakes up in a mysterious world full of danger. As you explore your surroundings, very little of the story is told directly. You won’t find a sound of the main villain, nor a grinning villain explaining his master plan. Instead, Little Nightmares 2 relies on clever world building to hint at what has happened in the scary places you explore. The world is suffering. The environment is ruined and neglected, filled with discarded objects from when trouble first appeared in this world. Clothes piled in garbage containers, glittering perfumed children, a mysterious television signal are just some of the many aspects that will catch your eye to show exactly how things went wrong. As you pull levers, dodge traps and decide how to get to the next area, you’ll want to explore every little side area so as not to miss a thing. word-image-10883 The enemies in Little Nightmares 2 dominate you, and if they get you, it’s game over. In the first game, you can dodge and sneak past creatures like the cooks and the janitor with the incredibly long arm. In theLittle Nightmares 2game, there are many different types of confrontations. Sometimes you even have to fight your enemies directly. The enemies you face here are just as terrifying and full of surprises. Several times I jumped out of my seat to try and survive against these enemies, as they tend to go through doors or suddenly turn around when you’re trying to escape. While the levels aren’t what they seem, most of your attempts to survive against these instant kill enemies are essentially time-based puzzles. You need to hide under the table here, create a distraction there, and slip between the narrow bars just as they’re about to catch you. word-image-10884 This means that you have to put in a lot of effortLittle Nightmares 2 ; due to the nature of some of the puzzles in the game, death will sometimes catch you unawares. The checkpoints are usually very close together, which usually isn’t too frustrating. Usually. Sometimes it takes more mistakes than I’d like to make to find the perfect combination of events that will lead me to the next scene. So,Little Nightmares 2 is a game that sometimes desperately needs a break. It’s easy to run headfirst into the wall, repeat the part dozens of times and get nowhere. That’s before you give up in frustration. This is especially evident in the combat sections of the game. There are a few small enemies here, and you can grab items scattered around the area to destroy them. However, this is easier said than done. In general, the weapons you find are appropriate for your character. It takes a long time to swing, and it’s incredibly difficult to gauge how far you’re going to swing and how fast your enemies are going to move. In some parts I was cursing because I couldn’t calculate the time it took to hit the various enemies coming at me. But usually, when I put the game away and came back with a clear mind, I succeeded in the part where I was stuck the first time. This silliness is the only aspect ofLittle Nightmares 2 that I can condemn, and even that has a certain old-fashioned charm. You die a few times here, it’s normal.

Little Nightmares 2 : review – The Bottom Line

  • A very impressive atmosphere
  • Well designed environments
  • gives credit to the player, is not overloaded with hints and tutorial sections
  • A fascinating story that unfolds

  • Some parts are too disappointing
  • The combat mechanics are unremarkable.

Little Nightmares 2 is much more elaborate than the first game, with more enemies and environments to explore. It also continues the storylines of the first game; although you play as a new character, at the beginning you meet an old friend who accompanies you on your journey. The game also has a new central antagonist, and you will see several references to this villain (and some of the things he has done to cause so much destruction in the world) as you progress through the various areas ofLittle Nightmares 2. Finally,Little Nightmares 2 is just plain fun to play. The way everything flows smoothly, with hidden loading screens and huge interconnected environments, the way huge enemies seem to go about their business until they notice you and plunge you into a terrifying frenzy – this game begs you to explore its twisted world further and never fails to impress. In short, Little Nightmares 2 is a must buy if you are a fan of the first game or similar platformers likeLimboorInside. It’s scary and beautiful, and makes your brain work by solving puzzles. It’s not perfect, but it’s one of the best in its genre.
